Catch two more waves
One wave
Then
Another wave
That's it
Focus purely on what’s in front of you
Two more waves
Then think about the next two waves
Then the next two, then the next two
Where does this concept come from?
Over the years, I have read a fair few ‘self-help’/business books
After a while they all become quite same-y
The same message packaged in a different way
Or just the same message in the same way
Boring (although it does go to highlight some key and core themes to all these successful people,
business stories, and self growth pathways)
As a result of this I have been looking for fresh perspectives
Stories of successful people from outside of the business world
Ones that may have a new message or pearl of wisdom
That’s when I found the below in an airport (love a good airport WHSmith)
“Beyond the Break: The Surf Inspired Success Code for Business and Life”
Christo Hall, the author, is a former pro surfer, turned successful business person
And he tells the ‘code’ through lessons he learnt whilst on the pro tour
My favourite is the ‘catch two more waves’ concept
Surfing can be quite technical, with surfers scanning the horizon for the next big ‘set’
I.e. they wait for what they think will be the biggest waves, as these can help them score the most points
(apparently, according to my Aussie friends, you can find these by watching the way the swell builds)
Christo would wait, wait, and project into the future waiting for the next biggest wave
Getting ready to smash it when the perfect wave came
Often he would forget the present, he would forget to get some scores on the doors by riding the waves in
front of him
He would be so caught up thinking about all potential future permutations that he wouldn't do what he
could in the here and now
One day as a junior he did this and was eliminated with no score
His big brother, who was watching gave him this pearl of wisdom
“Just focus on the next two waves”
Stay present
Focus on the moment
Play what is in front of you
Control the here and the now
Don’t live in the future nor the past
Live in this moment
Catch the next two waves
Because, ultimately, that is all you can do
And yes, this is a similar message to many others books, but its packaged in a way I had not thought of
before
It is the same with property (or any walk of life for that matter)
We can be so caught up looking at the horizon for the next ‘big set’
Or overwhelmed by the magnitude of the task at hand
That we forget the here and the now
Just starting out in property? Focus on your next wave (goal setting)
Building your portfolio and saving cash? Focus on your next wave (cutting costs and saving)
Existing mortgage term coming to an end? Focus on your next wave (speaking to a broker)
So
What is your next wave?
Think a friend would like this? Forward it their way.
Have a great weekend ahead,
Callum
